Progress

It is never a pleasant situation when a child loses a parent through separation or divorce, and more than anything else, my heart goes out to the child.

This story shows that some progress has been made, in gay and lesbian rights, for sure, but more importantly, in the rights of children. Just like the rest of us, this little girl didn't choose her parents... their gender or their sexuality.

Back in the 60's and 70's, when I was growing up... full custody was automatically awarded to the Mother. And while divorce was uncommon among my friends, I definitely remember children who suffered from lack of adequate bonding with their dads.

It is nice to see in 2004, that there are judges out there... who will consider the emotional best interest of the child, and honor the bonds that have been formed, regardless of gender or sexual orientation.
